How to install a gate hinge

Drill pilot holes for the hinge screws at each of the marked locations with a power drill and a drill bit before continuing with the rest of the installation. When you're ready to install the hinge screws to the fence post or adjacent structure, take the hinges apart if necessary to allow for a smooth installation while holding the gate in place. It is advantageous to have a second pair of hands available during this stage of the installation process. Change the drill bit for a screwdriver bit. Install the hinges by positioning them.

As you position the gate for installation onto the fence post, place a solid piece of wood or a concrete block on the ground to support its weight. You want to put as little strain on the screws as possible to ensure the gate is level and the hardware is working properly. Drive the hinge screws all the way into the fence post and the gate to ensure a tight fit. To keep your drill's motor from burning out, you may need to use a ratchet.

Once all of the hinges have been successfully installed, swing the gate open and closed a few times to ensure that it functions properly. Allow the gate to completely stop. The gate is level if it settles without swinging in either direction, and your installation is complete.

Mark the location of the center cross brace on the latch-side fence post if you are also installing one. Place the latch strike into the latch. Place the latch's two components against the post at the cross brace location and the gate until you're happy with the final placement. The center cross brace's final position must allow the gate to close flush with the fence. Mark the locations of the mounting holes. Drill pilot holes in each hole location. To finish your gate installation, screw the gate latch to the fence post and the strike to the gate.
